The History
The building at 8021 Main Street has a long history in the development of the town of Smithfield. It existed as a wooden building in the late 1890's to serve as a general store, pharmacy and doctor's office. All of downtown Smithfield's buildings were wooden structures and the entire town burned in the early 1900's. John T. Overbey (1859-1927) built the present building using thick paving brick walls to make it more fire resistant. Mr. Overbey opened the business as a general store, but passed away in 1927. Isaac C. "Cap" Snider and his wife Lillie Mae "Missus" Snider bought the property in 1928 and continued the business as a general store, stocking groceries, dry goods, hardware, feed and a pharmacy. "Cap" had previously owned a grocery in North Fort Worth and moved his family to Smithfield to avoid some of the "wild west" atmosphere of the early stockyard days. The store functioned as a meeting place for the community for many years- at one point housing the post office and having one of the first telephones in the town that had dial "9" capabilities.
After Cap passed away in 1942, Sam and Marguerite Snider took over the operation until the late 1950's. The building has been leased to several businesses, notably a feed store that many still fondly remember. The building was renovated in 1986 while maintaining the original exterior appearance.
One of the persons who operated one of the businesses swears that it is haunted by a friendly ghost. She claimed several paranormal visits happened to her while working late at night in the building. She felt it was either Lillie Mae or Marguerite revisiting the place they loved. You decide for yourself, but this legend has taken hold of the local merchants in the area.
Most recently the building has been a restaurant featuring barbecue and entertainment. The most recent renovations have turned it into great destination for dining and relaxing. Just remember though, if you are there late in the evening, you may have a friendly ghostly visit.
